How To Apply Highlighter Properly (and which ones to buy...)

June 23, 2017

Whether it be by the beach, down the catwalk or in magazines glow-y highlighted insta-shot faces are everywhere. Highlighter is the beauty world’s hottest trend, but we know it’s a trend that when done wrong, can be a disaster.

Let’s chat how to use highlighter on our faces properly and which ones to buy (so we get that sought-after glow without looking like an extra from Twilight).

The areas of the face that you want to focus on are the tops of the cheek bones, brow bone and your cupid’s bow. Applying highlighter to these areas will help to give your face more of a lifted appearance. For a little extra glow, feel free to pat a little bit just above the arch of your brow and the tip of your nose. If you want to give your nose a little nip/tuck without the complicated mess of contouring, applying your favourite highlighter in a short straight line down the bridge of your nose will give it a slimmer appearance.

And now that you're up to date with the areas you need to focus your highlighting skills on, it's time to do the handy work. Below I'm sharing my must-have products for every skin type. So now all you have to do is run out, buy and jump on this beauty trend. Ready, set GLOW!

Mecca Cosmetica Enlightened Illuminating Balm - $32.00

Texture: Cream

Skin: Combination to Dry

This little pot of wonders contains a super creamy, super smooth, super amazing balm that’s packed with yummy skin-nourishing ingredients like jojoba, coconut and castor seed oils. It also glides on the skin like nobody’s business. The colour is a warm, pinky shade that flatters all skin tones (and I really mean ALL) and it's incredibly easy to use! You can use your fingers to pat it into the skin (bare, before or over foundation) for a subtle glow or using a flat, dense brush for more of that strobe-light effect *cue sound effects*.

Hourglass Ambient Lighting Palette - $95.00

Texture: Powder

Skin: Normal to Oily

Soft glow, smooth texture, three shades and gorgeous packaging! This palette has three different shades; a neutral peach beige, a pearlescent soft pink and a golden beige. They’re all quite subtle so the end result is more of a soft glow with a velvet finish. It works best after you’ve applied your foundation and/or setting powder. You probably won’t need to use all three on yourself at the same time, but I sometimes like to use them as eyeshadows too!

Laura Mercier Face Illuminator Powder in indiscretion - $60.00 (avail. at Sephora Aus. in store)

Texture: Powder

Skin: All skin types

This product is a must-have for makeup artists, a cult-fave for makeup lovers and is the ultimate baby for getting that J-Lo Glow. The colour is an incredible rose gold that lifts, highlights and illuminates your skin so people from 1km can see the light bouncing off your gorgeous face. I find it's best used with a small, fluffy brush, it only takes a couple of swirls in the compact and a quick dusting to get glowing. However if you’re like me and you want more of an intense finish, I recommend a quick spritz of MAC’s Fix + Spray - $27.00 (my absolute cannot-live-without, desert-island, hydrating, nourishing, life-giving spray) on your brush before you swirl it in the compact!
